Empowering girls for their right to education.Girls are dropping out of school because of a lack of toilets. Toilets for girls in the schools means a brighter future.
In developing countries, the lack of separate toilets for girls and boys is among the top barriers to girls’ education. When a girl reaches puberty, access to a separate toilet can be the decisive factor of whether she continues with her education. When girls are menstruating, they need access to a water point and to have a place where they can dispose of their pads. Without this, girls may miss up to 5 days of school every month or worse, drop out of school completely
In the remote of area of Shamli, Meerut, and Muzaffarnagar of Uttar Pradesh, India the schools drop outs by girls is much higher. Upon local research and survey it was found that the schools have inadequate toilets facilities for girls.
In India’s schools, recent reports also showed that 22 per cent did not have appropriate toilets for girls, 58 per cent of preschools had no toilet at all and 56 per cent of preschools had no water on the premises.(Source: Rapid survey on children 2013-14)
Building toilet separates people from poop, drastically decreasing diseases in communities and schools. It also provides safety and dignity for women, giving them a place to go so they no longer have to wait until dark or expose themselves during the day.
